Pat Tompkins-McGill, A.C.S.W., Ph.D.

Dr. Pat Tompkins-McGill holds a Master's degree in Social Work and a Ph.D. in Special Education. She is a licensed clinical social worker in both New Mexico and Texas and maintains private practices in Austin and Santa Fe. She is an approved supervisor for
Professional Counselors seeking licensing as well as for B.S.W. and M.S.W. field students in Social Work. She has over forty years experience in human services, including work in child welfare, residential and out-patient treatment centers for children and adolescents, and teaching at the University level at both The University of Texas at Austin and the College of Santa Fe. She also served as Executive Director of an agency in New Mexico offering programs to people with developmental disabilities and their families.
Dr. Tompkins-McGill specializes in work with very young children and their families, using modalities such as play therapy, behavioral approaches, psychoeducational and milieu therapy, and consultation with families and day care centers. She deals with the wide range of issues that children can present, including loss (through death, divorce, or other means) of significant others, attachment and bonding, behavioral challenges, school and day care/preschool problems, trauma, and developmental issues. She has extensive experience with adoption and foster care and has seen many children in both situations, as well as children with varied diagnoses, from ADHD to Autism. She has worked with numerous children with developmental disabilities and delays.
Dr. Tompkins-McGill also sees adults. She is experienced in work with anxiety, stress reduction, marriage and family counseling, depression, trauma recovery, parenting and family issues, and personal growth. She has worked with many adults with disabilities, including cognitive disabilities. With adults, she uses an eclectic approach that includes her advanced training in EMDR, Gestalt Therapy, Transactional Analysis, and cognitive and psychoanalytic approaches, among others.
Dr. Tompkins-McGill spends the winter months in Austin and the summer months in Santa Fe. During her time in Santa Fe she comes to Austin once a month to see clients.
